We knew great things were in store when Chevy finally gave in and transitioned the Corvette from its conventional front-engine construction to a mid-engine format, the result of which is the all-new C8 Corvette Stingray. And unbeknownst to many, the new Corvette Z06 – mainly its naturally-aspirated, flat-plane crank V8 engine – has been right under our noses the entire time, in the form of the Chevy C8.R racing car unveiled in 2020. Old Legends & New BeginningsNow that the curtains have lifted on the 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06, purists will appreciate the main reason they relocated the engine. “Virtually every component that distinguishes the Z06 was developed to support or enhance its capability,” said Tadge Juechter, executive chief engineer, Corvette. “Racing was the reason the Z06 was conceptualized in 1963, and it continues to support the development of roadgoing models that make them better on the street and the track.” Chevrolet created the first Corvette Z06 in 1963 to dominate the racetrack. But as time went on, the Z06 has exemplified the symbiosis of a track-ready supercar. “The new Corvette Z06 defines the American supercar,” said General Motors President Mark Reuss. “It builds on the distinctive design and groundbreaking dynamics introduced with the mid-engine Corvette and elevates them to deliver refined but uncompromising track capability with world-class performance.” 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06: All About The MotorThe 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 has an all-new 5.5-liter naturally aspirated LT6 V8 engine pumping out 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque. You can’t have a manual, but Chevy gave the standard eight-speed dual-clutch transmission a shorter 5.56:1 final drive ratio for even faster acceleration. With those numbers, the LT6 has the highest horsepower output of any naturally-aspirated V8 engine in production. More importantly, the engine churns out peak horsepower at a stratospheric 8,400 rpm (only 200 revolutions below the 8,400 rpm fuel cut redline) and peak torque at 6,300 rpm. Instead of installing a supercharger on top of a pushrod valvetrain, GM insists that a flat-plane crankshaft with titanium connecting rods and intake valves will quell the reciprocating mass or “shakiness” inherent in overbored, flat-plane V8 engines. In addition, all 32 valves get two springs to prevent valve float at higher engine speeds, while direct-acting “finger followers” require no lash adjustments throughout the motor’s lifespan. And since the new LT6 engine revs close to 9,000 rpm, it produces an intoxicating sound similar to the C8.R racing car. Chevrolet has released a feature film, Putting the World On Notice, to commemorate the Corvette Z06’s debut, where you can hear the LT6 screaming at the top of its lungs. Performance At Its CoreThe 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 is essentially the Corvette C8.R underneath, and that’s a good thing. The Z06 rides on the same chassis and has similar exterior proportions as the Corvette C8.R. However, it does get a 3.6-inch wider body with bespoke front and rear fascias to improve cooling and aerodynamics. It also has a reconfigurable rear wing with adjustable trailing edges (or wicker bills) to maximize grip and downforce. “By leveraging the mid-engine architecture’s inherent advantages, we achieved six percent more downforce than a seventh-gen ZR1 at eight percent lower drag,” Juechter added. The Z06 also comes with standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear forged alloy rims available in five distinct finishes, each wrapped in bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4S ZP tires. If you want a more hardcore vibe, there’s an optional carbon-fiber wheelset that reduces unsprung mass by up to 41 pounds (18.6 kg). Z06 Performance PackageChoosing the Z06 Performance Package adds Michelin Sport Cup 2 ZR P racing tires (explicitly developed for the Corvette Z06), Brembo six-piston front brakes (15.7-inch front and 15.4-inch rear discs), a Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 suspension, and a carbon fiber aero package including a carbon front splitter, underbody strakes, front-corner dive planes, and a carbon rear wing. Bespoke Interior CraftsmanshipPrevious Corvettes were not exactly renowned for having premium interior appointments, but the C8 Corvette has changed all that. Gone are the dreary plastics in place of soft-touch and premium materials that you would typically find in a German or Italian supercar. “From its wide planted stance with sculpted surfaces to its premium and carbon fiber materials, the Z06 instills an aura of raw power and performance with bespoke craftsmanship,” said Phil Zak, executive design director at Chevrolet. Buyers can choose from seven interior colors (expandable to thousands of color combinations), three seat choices, six seatbelt options, and two available interior carbon trim options. The available carbon fiber interior package adds a carbon steering wheel, carbon shift paddles, and carbon trimmings. The Z06 is also available in up to twelve exterior colors, seven wheel packages, and six brake caliper colors to ensure no two Corvette Z06 models are alike. 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06: Pricing & AvailabilityPricing for the 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 remains forthcoming, but we expect the bill to ring up around $92,000 for the starting MSRP. The Air Up ThereThere’s this stretch in India reputed to be the highest drivable road in the world as it crests the Umling La Pass in India’s Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. And by crest, I mean it is 19,300 feet above sea level, which is, technically speaking, completely nuts. Look, I’ve driven to the top of Mauna Kea before, and that was “only” 13,796 feet up, and the rental car barely made it. At another mile above Mauna Kea, this Umling La Pass deal looks seriously nutzo. Extreme TerrainOriginally built by the Border Roads Organization, the Umling La Pass is an extraordinary feat of engineering that was carried out under ridiculous weather conditions: Minimum temperature ranges from -20 degrees to -10 degrees, extremely thin air density, and wind speeds varying from 40 to 80 km/h. And no, in case you’re interested, this isn’t a smooth paved road like you’d find out front of the mall. The Umling La Pass road combines gravel and rough concrete, so not only is it waaaay up there with atrocious weather, but the surface ain’t a cakewalk either. “This is a proud moment for Lamborghini as the Urus unlocks the pinnacle of high-altitude driving across the Umling La Pass,” said Sharad Agarwal, Head of Lamborghini India. “I would like to congratulate the Border Roads Organization and its team on their remarkable achievement.” Heading Up The Umling La PassTo put an exclamation point on what it was able to achieve, Lamborghini took its Urus along this imposing road not once but twice (October 8th and 9th, 2021). The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 of the Urus played a significant part in this. The engine cranks out 641 ponies and 625 lb-ft. of torque (at sea level), allowing the Urus to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds (at sea level). However, we won’t launch the production next year. I expect the production to start in Elabuga in 2023” – said the senior executive. As reported by Kommersant newspaper in March 2021, the company had plans to launch the production of the Ford Transit electric van in 2022, alongside the main diesel model. Ford has presented the Transit electric light commercial vehicle in 2020 and plans to commence the production of the model in the United States at the facilities of Ford Otosan in Turkey. Shirinov has explained the reasons behind the delay of the launch of the production of the new model in Russia with the peculiarities of the vehicle’s life cycle. The electric van will only be available in the US in 2022 and the majority of the components for the Russian assembly will come from Ford Otosan. Meanwhile, as previously, Sollers Ford intends to localise the production of the 2.2 litres diesel engine in Elabuga in 2022, to be installed on the Transit model. The production volume of the engines won’t be large scale, as told by Shirinov. The idea is to make it easier to convert a car originally built with an internal combustion engine (ICE) into an EV. Up until now, a significant amount of fabrication has been required for such a conversion. Ford’s plan, presumably for existing Ford products, is to sell a “bolt-in” motor with a much more straightforward installation process. Ford has been mum on the details, but we are excited to see what they will unveil at SEMA. We are also excited to see Ford’s latest custom Bronco builds at SEMA 2021. StellantisStellantis is the former FCA (Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles) which is the former Daimler-Chrysler … you get the idea. In addition to Chrysler, the principal U.S. brands under this umbrella are Dodge, Ram, and Jeep. You probably know that Ram and Jeep are hot right now. Mopar Performance has teased us with several shadowy images. While lacking detail, these teasers seem to show a Jeep Hybrid Wrangler outfitted for overlanding, and several Ram pickups, including a TRX at a campsite. These brands are known for wowing us at product launches, so we are excited to see what shows up at SEMA 2021. Other Automakers at SEMA 2021While we do not have details at this moment, we know from SEMA’s published participation list that Honda, Nissan, and Toyota will also be represented at the show. Perhaps it is equally noteworthy that no other Asian manufacturer and none of the European manufacturers will be at SEMA. That would include such well-known makes as Subaru, Hyundai, Porsche, and BMW. This is not meant as a criticism: it is important to state that there are still COVID-19 travel restrictions, and some of these companies possibly could not gain clearance for representatives to travel. However, independent aftermarket companies may display some of these vehicles. Still, it’s clear that it’s the domestic Big Three who will dominate. SEMA 2021 PRO Cup ChallengeThe SEMA PRO Cup Challenge is designed to highlight the advantages of accessorizing new vehicles. The target audience for this challenge is new car dealers and those in the accessory marketing business. Ground rules require mods that can be done in less than 40 hours at a cost of under $12,500. Judges will consider factors such as consumer appeal, ease of workmanship, and profit potential to the dealers and marketers. Vehicles entered into this year’s challenge include a 2021 Chevy Silverado, 2020 Ford F-150, 2021 Ford Bronco, 2020 Jeep Gladiator, 2021 Kia Telluride, 2021 Kia Sorrento, and a 2022 VW Atlas. Compared to more lavish builds, which can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, these more affordable mods tied to some of the most popular new vehicles on the market today should have broad appeal to all show-goers. Attendees will even have the chance to vote for their “Fan Favorite” among the seven. The real-world application of these accessories should make the PRO Cup Challenge one of the more popular events this year. OEM Collision Repair Technology SummitAn important but overlooked part of every SEMA event is the segment dedicated to collision repair. It is hosted by the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS). While lacking the flashy bling of chrome wheels or oversized exhaust, fixing bent sheet metal is a critical part of the automotive aftermarket. The SCRS represents over 6,000 collision repair shops and over 58,000 professionals. As vehicles have become more complex, so has the work involved to repair them. Everything from advanced electronics to modern materials like aluminum and carbon fiber makes collision repair that much more complicated. Add to that the large-scale switch to EVs, and you can begin to appreciate how body shop employees need to be continually educated. This year, three EV manufacturers, GM, Lucid Motors, and Rivian, will field representatives to take part in a panel discussion. They will share information about the uniqueness of their EV platforms, how they differ from ICE cars, and what kinds of changes the collision repair industry can anticipate as more EVs occupy our roadways. Of course, everyone benefits when industry leaders are willing to sit down with each other to better both employees and car owners. It is especially rewarding to see two start-ups like Lucid and Rivian so willing to become a recognized voice in the industry. Hunter To Showcase Mobile Tire EquipmentHere’s a brand name well-known within the tire business but likely unfamiliar to casual consumers and enthusiasts: Hunter, formally the Hunter Engineering Company. They have been specializing in tire-changing and balancing equipment since 1946 and have kept pace with the times by offering more and more sophisticated machinery to meet the demands of vehicle owners and tire shops. At SEMA 2021, Hunter will display a new tire changer designed for on-the-road service work. By designing this machine so it can be bolted to the floor of a van, a tire technician can travel to the vehicle rather than vice-versa. AvtoNovostiDnya.- The construction of a new building for the assembly of BMW automobiles has been completed at the Kaliningrad factory of Avtotor. The enterprise has been established following the BMW’s decision to build its own plant in Russia. As clarified by the company, the whole factory complex is located at the main production zone in the Alexander Kosmodemyansky microdistrict in Kaliningrad. The site includes a recently built assembly and logistics complex (approximately 52,000 m2) and an administrative building is under construction. Also, there are plans to build a paint shop designed to paint 100,000 bodies per year within the establishment. As explained by Avtotor: “The creation of the new production facilities will be implemented within the framework of the obligations of the current SPIC, which requires further deepening of technical conversions in car production, organisation of full-scale production of new models including the welding and painting of bodies, increasing the level of engineering, design and technological support of production and digitalisation of management.” Also, despite rumours on the delay of the start of the assembly of BMW automobiles, the production capacity of the new plant has already been speculated as 50,000 vehicles per year. All flagship models of the Bavarian brand are planned to be manufactured at the enterprise, including the X4, X5, X6 and X7 crossovers, alongside a 7-series executive sedan. Although the BMW headquarters have neither confirmed nor denied the construction of the new workshops, it’s almost certain that the works are intended specifically for these models. Bronco by BDS SuspensionsAAA conducted a study about the importance of Move Over Laws as they relate to the work first responders do on the side of the road. And for those in the line of duty, long-time Ford builder BDS Suspensions (a subsidiary of Fox Shocks) created this emergency response machine based on a 2021 two-door Black Diamond Bronco. Key features include a BDS four-inch UCA System with Fox 2.5 PES coilovers, BDS rear adjustable control arms and track bar, swaybar disconnect, and 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 tires. The CrawlTek Revolution bumpers include a recessed winch mount, recovery hooks, and belly skid in the front, along with a winch mount and recovery hooks in the rear. Bronco BAJA FORGED by LGE-CTS MotorsportsTheresa Contreras, a veteran Ford SEMA builder, designer, and founder of BAJA FORGED Parts, will turn some heads with this custom four-door Outer Banks series Bronco. Top features include an ICON Vehicle Dynamics 3.0 suspension lift, front and rear BAJA FORGED bumpers and fender flares, and Ford off-road rock lights. The spare tire carrier and tailgate folding table are nice extras as well. While the exterior is super cool (and perhaps even a little mysterious), the inside is also worth writing home about. The cabin includes a JBL sound bar, GFA cargo area protector, under-floor safe, cargo organizer, all-weather floor mats, and a refrigerator. Although this BAJA FORGED Bronco is meant for the trail, we would love to cruise up Woodward Avenue on a Saturday night here in Detroit with it. Bronco Sport BAJA FORGED by LGE-CTS MotorsportsSara Morosan, co-owner of LGE-CTS Motorsports, created this rough-and-ready version of a 2021 Bronco Sport Badlands. And it should be a blast to drive with its 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine and Borla cat-back performance exhaust. To handle the road or lack thereof, LGE-CTS Motorsports included an ICON Vehicle Dynamics suspension system and front and rear sway bars from Hellwig Products. Like the other Bronco custom builds, a WARN Industries winch is standard, along with a Factor 55 hook and aluminum fairlead.
